Preliminary evaluation

On my front cover and I have used black, red and blue this is due to the fact that from my questionnaire I could see that's what the target audience wished for. However the dark black and red colours have blended into the image therefore the text does not stand out and makes it difficult to read. I have used a bright shade of blue to make my magazine stand out due to the rest of my front cover using bland colours, making it look boring and uninteresting to read. Although because the blue is bright it makes the front cover look cheap and unprofessional therefore my target audience won’t be interested in this magazine. I have not used a barcode on my front cover which makes my magazine look even more unprofessional. The image I have used is not giving off any eye-contact which again makes my magazine look boring. On my contents page, I have used the same image which does not give off any eye contact and I have used black again and I have used a darker red colour compared to the red I have used on the front cover which also blends into the image in the background, making the magazine look dull. There is a lot of white space that I should have used to make my magazine look more fun and interesting which would have attracted my target audience’s attention who are college students aged between sixteen to nineteen.

Double page spread

Contents page- rejected version

I have rejected this piece from being my contents page, due to the fact that it does not include enough colour and the topic sections are not segmented clearly, making my magazine look boring and un-professional. Therefore in my final contents page piece I am going to include these factors, making sure that the page clearly represents a pop music magazine.

Front cover- rejected version

I have rejected this piece from being my front cover, due to the fact that it does not contain enough colour or images. Therefore it does not represent a pop music magazine and will not attract my target audience. On my final piece I am going to include these extra colours and images so that it represents a pop magazine.

Survey results

My pop music magazine questionnaire shows that the majority of people who have answered this survey and like pop music are females. It also shows that the majority of these females are aged between thirteen to seventeen however a large amount of them are also aged between eighteen to twenty-four, therefore I am going to aim my magazine at fourteen to eighteen year olds to cover the average of these age groups. The majority of people who answered my survey answered that they would purchase my magazine monthly at the price of three pounds. The main three colours that have been chosen are white, pink and black. The majority of people said they listened to pop music by downloading it. Pop rock was the most popular pop fusion genre chosen. Fashion and celebrity gossip were the most popular topics that my target audience would like to see in my magazine along with pop music. Almost all of the people who answered this survey, selected ‘yes’ they would be interested in freebies, which would encourage them to purchase this magazine especially if the freebies were posters. Based on this research I am going to use many of these points within my magazine, which will make my magazine look professional, so that my target audience should be interested in my magazine.

Location props & costume report

Due to the fact that I am going to crop my models out of the main image meant that it does not matter where I take my images just as long as the light is clear and does not produce any shadows over my model therefore I took my photos in a well light room with a white background meaning there was no interference with my images and I could easily crop the model from the rest of the image. I have dressed my models in outfits and makeup that my target audience would be likely to wear so that they would be attracted to the magazine and know that it is being aimed at them such as a white crop top and pink lipstick with thick black eye liner and mascara. I used white headphones as a prop for my main double spread image, this is because the article is about listening to music while revising, which means the image links into the article making the double page easy to understand making it attractive for the target audience. The headphones are white meaning they go with my colour scheme of my magazine.

Magazine analysis

Denotation: This is a Vogue magazine which was released in November. The masthead is gold and the theme colours are gold, purple, white and black. The font style is the same throughout but it changes with different sizes and colours. The barcode is positioned at the bottom left hand corner. The model is positioned in the middle of the page with her hands on her hips; she is wearing a purple dress which is decorated with gold, brown, black and white beads around her neck. The model is standing on a path or slabs in front of a building which has been blurred. Connotation: The use of the purple, black, white and gold makes this magazine look sophisticated and is aiming at an age group of twenty to forty. These colours have also been used to give of a warm feeling which will attract attention due to the magazine being released in winter and usually people like to be warm in the colder months of the year. The cover lines uses the same font throughout and the main line is purple and any other added extra information is white .The model is posing with her hands on her hips, which is showing she has attitude and is strong which is aiming at females showing how independent they can be. The main cover line which is in a larger font size compared to the other cover lines says 'warm up winter' and then goes on to talk about wearing dresses in the winter, may be the reason why the model is wearing a purple dress outside in November. The 'warm up winter' theme is carried on throughout this front cover due to the use of colours which are gold, purple, white and black, which gives it a warm feeling. The models makeup gives of a natural look which appeals to the magazine targeted audience which are females aged between twenty to forty, usually between these two age groups females like to give themselves more of a natural, mature look compared to the colourful makeup selection they may have used to warn. The models head is in front of the masthead, which shows how they don't need to have their masthead standing out for customers to buy, because they are confident in that their customers will easily be able to tell that this is a Vogue magazine and will try to find it surrounded by hundreds of magazines. The barcode and the price is positioned at the bottom left hand corner which is the standard position to find it, which allows their customers to find it easily.
